Hello all,
Seeing as this mailing list is hardly used. I almost never remember to post on it when I do something relevant. Should we just kill this mailing list?
Better place to get assistance is actually IRC: #club on https://newnet.net
I am on IRC daily.. not always great depending on timezones but if no reply on IRC then you can always send root@tilde.club an email as well and I will handle it at that point.
So in my opinion we should just remove this mailing list. But I am always open to opinion.
Thanks everyone for enjoying tilde.club~!
Hi!
I very rarely interact, but personally I like receiving and reading the occasional email thread (though it's true there has not been one in a long time).
Up to you though - if this takes up resources and is barely used, it makes sense to sunset it.
Thank you,
~ Melyanna

I kept hoping it would spring into life one day :-( Mailing lists are cool.
I've subscribed to several tilde mailing lists. Well yeah, the volume isn't that much but it's nice to see someone discussing via email, even if it's several months apart. :)

Newnet isn't always reachable. If there are problems, I'd like to have this as an option to let people know of an outage.

I would prefer it to be subscribers only for submissions to get rid of the spam attempts, otherwise I am fine with any mostly inactive list, i have a few

I'm with Alex on this one - I can't think of many valid reasons we would want mail coming in from non-subscribers, but we surely want to keep spam out. It's been a hot minute since I last configured a mailing list, so I'm not sure how much overhead this would add to maintenance.

Agree with what some others have expressed. I enjoy reading the occasionally posting to the list and do not mind how few and far between it is.
If there is burden in maintaining it then perfectly fine to drop it however.

I'd like to keep the list. I'm not a big IRC user, but I do check this email fairly regularly and would like to participate in whatever discussions pop up.

Mailing lists are cool and not only should we keep it, I'd love to see more people using it, if that's permitted. I haven't posted because I didn't want to be off topic, maybe a list FAQ is in order.
What sort of topics do you envision we discuss here?
Best, -sneak
I'd just like to pop in and agree with this - is this list meant to be specific to meta tilde.club stuff?

This message content should be treated as confidential, and if you are an attorney, should be handled as privileged.
I would also like the list to stay active. It's nice to get mail. Besides, I think a mailing list is much better than IRC for announcements, because verba volant sed scripta manent.
Some people are saying that they want to keep the mailing list because the IRC network might be malfunctioning at some given time.
To this, I want to say that you don't need a mailing list to report problems with the IRC. The mailing list is to talk to everyone (that is subscribed). If you want to report a problem with the IRC, you send a mail to root@tilde.club .
So, this argument, to support of the mailing list, is false.
Judging from the number of responses to this initial messages, it appears the list is worth something after all. It seems quite a number of people are still plugged into it anyway. ;)

My preference is a mailing list; I'm not a huge fan of things being hidden in chat, whether that's Discord or IRC.
I'm fine either way, just adding my +1 for this list.

I concur. The mailing list is is a great asynchronous way to communicate between users, even if they are not on IIRC.

Well it seems people would like to keep this feature around a bit longer. I hope we can make more use of it. I will setup/communicate a better solution to notify of downtime/upcoming downtime. I don't think a mailing list is the best solution for that.
As for what to use the mailing list for here are some suggestions:
Personal Projects Showcase: Share what you're working on—coding, writing, art, etc. Encourage others to do the same.
Ask for Advice: Invite members to share their tips on coding challenges, server setups, or creative processes.
Tilde History & Stories: Discuss the origins of tilde.club or share nostalgic moments and anecdotes from the community.
Tech Trends & Discussions: Explore and debate emerging technologies, programming languages, or software tools.
Creative Writing Prompts: Share a topic or theme and invite members to write short stories or poems.
Tilde Themed Challenges: Create fun, light-hearted challenges like "Build a website in under 1KB" or "Create the most obscure ASCII art."
Open-Ended Questions: Pose questions like, "What’s your favorite command-line tool and why?" or "What’s a project you wish existed?"
Community Collaboration: Suggest collaborative projects like a community zine, shared website, or group coding project.
IRC or Terminal Hacks: Discuss cool things you can do with IRC, shells, or terminal emulators.
Monthly Theme Discussions: Rotate topics monthly—coding, philosophy, retro tech, etc.
Game Nights/Events: Organize virtual events like coding sprints, trivia, or multiplayer games.
Thanks everyone that replied!
Feeling inspired by deepend’s suggestions here, I wanted to pose a question to the list—can you recommend a good blog or two that you’ve subscribed to this year? Having mostly shifted off social media and revived my RSS reader a while back, I’m always looking for new feeds to add, especially those maintained by some dedicated individual with an interest in a niche I can learn more about.
For instance, Weird Fucking Games (https://wfgames.net/) consistently shows me interactive art I would never have found on my own, with a focus on itch.io-hosted stuff you can play right in a browser. Silent-ology (https://silentology.wordpress.com/) covers a film era I know very little about with tons of research written in an accessible style. And Magical Trash (https://www.magicaltrash.com/) is literally just photos documenting the many varieties of garbage cans at Disney properties around the world.

I like Julia Evans' blog at https://jvns.ca/atom.xml, which she says is about:
- being delighted about programming - showing how topics traditionally considered “hard” and “scary” are actually accessible and interesting and fun (TCP! / Kernel hacking! / Traceroute! / gzip! / databases! / SSL!) - asking questions and getting better every day. - how being clear & curious & humble is better than sounding like I know it all already - experimenting with alternative ways to teach hard concepts (zines!)
She also serves a second RSS feed of shorter TIL tidbits at https://jvns.ca/til/atom.xml.

I haven’t had a chance to add many new ones over the past few months – it’s been a busy time – but there are still 2,300 to browse through.

Just want to leave this info that may interest others. If you want to send a public message for me to view it, use the tilde.club's NNTP server[1]. If you want to send me a personal message, send an email message to keyboardan@tilde.club .
If you also want to unsubscribe from this mailing list, send an email (probably this email has to have the subject of "Unsubscribe", not sure on that) to tildeclub-leave@lists.tildeverse.org .
deepend, please do tell if the unsubscribe to the mailing list's info is correct.

- i think that would be ok, if no mailing lists end here i don't know how people use to get details about their projects, but rarely i see some interesting in this list, except some ads. - i think rss, or some news could replace the need of a mailist here, and keep email for another kind of communication, that will make good both to the mail server, and the leak of the name around. - i mostly use gui access, cause my remote system is next to me, so....
