I’m throughly enjoying Robin Sloan’s newsletter:
It goes out once a week and invariably contains something whimsical or interesting like a thought or a link that sends me down the rabbit hole.

I'm enjoying the works of a Polish science fiction writer named Stanisław Lem. It's all cool philosophical humor played out with robots and such things. I'm particularly a fan of The Cyberiad, which is a collection of short stories mostly following a pair of near god-like robotic engineers.
I have also continued to consistently enjoy the podcast Welcome to Night Vale for the several years I've been listening to it.

I've been enjoying a popular D&D podcast called The Adventure Zone. The latest campaign, which follows the truly weird stories of three almost ordinary people in West Virginia, concluded in a satisfying finale this week. I recommend the whole series as one of the best podcasts yet recorded.
Not to hijack the thread, but I haven't introduced myself. I'm Bradley. I'm a recent transplant from southern Maine to northern Virginia, along with my girlfriend and our cat. I work in Washington during the week and often enjoy a good podcast (see above) or tinkering with one or another open source project on the weekend. I'm also a licensed Private Pilot.

Ahhh Hazel I love Lem's works!
The Cyberiad and The Futurological Congress are my two favs :~
Similarly excellent in the dept. of sci-fi short stories is Ted Chiang. Less humor though, but magnificent stories and concepts. Villeneuve's Arrival was based on his short 'Story of Your Life'

Totally forgot The Good Place was airing again!! Excluding that, my current top three: - Logic Magazine http://logicmag.io: tech publication, but self-aware. Two favorite articles have been the one on Mormon transhumanists and the honest take on China's social credit system. - Off the Air https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=skD7r0yWOG4: artistic, though clearly not always intended to be viewed sober. it's great for people that enjoy streaming slow TV videos in the background (or not being sober) - SAINt JHN's newest album https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDP-h_1Ok3I (chill hip hop): same lyrics every time but his voice is just too nice to care

Ever since I saw Darlingside in concert last spring, they have been in heavy rotation here. They make these amazing, beautiful songs about Super Mario Brothers, Back to the Future, and the end of the world (among other non sci-fi and video game topics) and I’m absolutely in love with it. I saw them basically on a whim and didn’t know what to expect, and was absolutely blown away. There are lots of great performances on Youtube. Songs to try out include The Ancestor, Best of the Best of Times, Go Back, Harrison Ford, and The God of Loss.

Lately the kids and I have gotten sucked into watching hurdy gurdy videos on YouTube.
It all started when a friend showed me this:
https://youtu.be/HWo3kPp8IJo?t=182
Which is a great example of medieval hurdy gurdy music.
Not long after, this one blew my mind:
And it's been a rabbit hole ever since.
~pfhawkins
I'm glad you mentioned hurdy gurdy, I didn't know that and they are amazing. I'll listen a lot to it.
As for me, I'm spending a lot of time in some YouTube channels. Two of them that really deserve to be mentioned are
* 3blue1brown (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCYO_jab_esuFRV4b17AJtAw), with great explanations to interesting mathematical problems through beautiful animations. I even got a bit emotional when I learned what a determinant was :) * Journey to the Microcosmos (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBbnbBWJtwsf0jLGUwX5Q3g), where gorgeous videos from microscopic organisms are commented by the most pleasant narrator ever.
I've been watching a lot of old episodes of Barefoot Contessa (Ina Garten) on YouTube. It's such a calming universe. The episodes with Jeffrey in them https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLAXj1uO2c0 are the best.
I also look forward to Thursdays for new episodes of Dave Chang's podcast, The Dave Chang Show. He really goes right for it, whatever it is. If you're having a crisis of confidence, I suggest starting with any of the Pre-Opening Diaries, especially the first of the two episodes https://www.theringer.com/2019/3/14/18265299/momofuku-kawi-pre-opening-diaries-vol-1 he recorded with the chef of Momofuku Kawi, Eun Jo Park.
Theme: It's good to watch people be thoughtful, and it's good to listen to people be honest.

I've been watching Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin (both shorts and longer features) on youtube. It's so strange to watch eg. a Charlie Chaplin short from 1914, or Buster Keaton and Fatty Arbuckle in 1918, and imagine the world and context they're operating in. It makes me want to study film.
I'm reading the new DC Comics "Lois Lane" series. She's a tenacious investigative reporter. It's some real "ripped from the headlines" stuff.
When I can, I like to lay on the couch on a Sunday and half-snooze while a baseball game happens on the TV. Sometimes my kids let me do this.
Looking forward to: the new John Le Carre novel later in the fall. Also, the household copy of "The Testaments" has been lent to a neighbour and I plan to read it when it returns.

I have been deeply stressed and anxious about the news over the past few days. Last night I unplugged everything, put down my phone, and re-watched "Into the Spider-Verse," which is streaming on the Netflix. Cannot recommend this film highly enough!
Per Miles Morales: "And when I feel alone, like no one understands what I'm going through, I remember my friends who get it. I never thought I'd be able to do any of this stuff. But I can. Anyone can wear the mask. YOU could wear the mask. If you didn't know that before, I hope you do now."

Further to the prompt: The Good Place The Podcast is good media, without which I confess that I would not have known it was back because while I knew it was premiering in September, in my head it is still the first week of September or so *checks temperature* or maybe the last week of August, I dunno.
Okay, stick with me. I’m here to talk about the 1979-1984 TV series “Real People” which is available streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/video/detail/B01LWMK3QI/
Imagine This American Life as a TV show co-hosted by Fred Willard. It’s a slice of life from a bygone era, combining studio segments with short films produced in the field.
Just go watch the first episode and you’ll get the idea. There’s a story about a truck driver who is — you’ll never believe this — a woman! Golly! And a TV station in a small town run by a cute little old couple.
The second episode features a story about — what? Lady weight lifters? That’s crazy! And one old man’s quest to get gambling out of Nevada. And a humorous political rant about wasteful spending in Congress. Oh, the more things change.
But what ties it all together and makes it beautiful is the innocence of a time when everyone wasn’t constantly aware that at any moment they may be on camera. There’s a different sensibility in the mannerisms, the fashion, the style, the way people present themselves. It just feels so pure.
Anyway… yeah, so that’s media I enjoy. I’m gonna go watch The Good Place now.

I remember that show very well. It was one of the shows my whole family sat down to watch when I was little, although I think my parents had sent my brother to bed. Feeling a little nostalgic and melancholy, now. Might watch a bit while I have my lunch. Thanks!

I was thinking the same thing. I associate the two shows with each other, but I looked it up and they were on different networks on different nights! That’s Incredible doesn’t look like it’s available to watch right now, but I may need to watch an episode of Real People every Monday night for a while, for (very) old time’s sake.

I distinctly remember a moment when the Real People hosts took a passing shot at That’s Incredible for imitating their show. Something where they were talking about how often TV networks would produce spinoffs successful shows, and then... (quotes only as exact as 40 years of memory slippage will allow)
Sarah: Unless they’re ABC, in which case they’ll make a *ripoff* Skip: That’s incredible!

My memory of Real People was that my parents were absolutely outraged over it (which, on looking back, was kinda of their personal brand) and danged if I can figure out why.
I do remember endless commercials for it and being utterly sick of it, which is kind of comical because it cropped up right about the time I got my first computer and it wasn't like I was watching a lot of TV to *see* that many commercials.

What’s some media you’ve been enjoying lately? Don’t worry if it’s mainstream or lowbrow or a guilty pleasure. Anything’s fine. What are you enjoying?
A hobby level education series building an 8-bit Computer on a breadboard at https://youtube.com/user/eaterbc/playlists
Advanced it to bulding a video card on breadboards
Keeps some mistakes in video and talks through their fixes.
Opened my eyes to the world of breadboard circuits -- I didn't know how to use them before and never investigated -- realizing uses in Raspberry Pi projects.

We're running through another viewing of Dr. Who (the "new" ones). We most recently watched the 50th Anniversary episode *The Day of the Doctor*. It's brilliant! TV is on hiatus for now while my wife is out of town, so I'm mainlining impeachment news like a fiend.
Pro tip: Doctor Who is much more entertaining.

(Hi all, new here. Let's try this again, I'm used to reply in a mailinglist go to the complete group instead of just the original sender...)
I've been re-finding my love for comics and graphic novels. I lost touch with some 20 years ago but thanks to some blogs and podcasts I'm back in to it. Currently I am reading I Hate Fairyland by Skottie Young and Punk Rock and Mobile Homes by Derf Backderf.
PS: Please allow me to introduce myself. Frank, from Utrecht, the Netherlands. I'm a blogger and active in the Indieweb community. I'm not that proficient in all thing tilde yet. Let's see what it all brings.

There's a YouTube ~~scene~~ of stuff-restoration videos: mostly unnarrated, just hands-on-tools, with the repetitive parts sped up. Of the many practitioners, I get the biggest kick out of a Swiss (?) guy who posts as "my mechanics". His videos are less "restorations", more "reconstructions of the Platonic ideal of a thing, using its own parts as base materials." Some favorites:
"Rusty Old Coffee Grinder" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zFbHfB2AnVQ "Antique Hand Plane" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dgZ41Rg1whs "Antique Rusty Micrometer" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nltNxh4PaZY
I’m a bit sad that the second season of Stath Lets Flats finished this week, because that was good.

For me, the answer to this question will always be One Piece, which I have referred to as "manga and anime's Lord of the Rings." I once wrote of it:
*Oda has a talent for weaving disparate details together, collected from
every cultural and historical source he can absorb, to create something new and exciting. This skill is most apparent in the colorful designs of his characters and the settings in which they are introduced. The One Piece world is populated by a veritable cast of snowflakes: hundreds of characters with unique visual designs, personalities, and origins, working as pirates, marines, government officials, privateers, revolutionaries, and more. In one part of the story, the Straw Hats fight to save a kingdom reminiscent of ancient Egypt from a sinister secret society. In another, they race enemies based on angels, native Americans, and the rapper Eminem (yes, really) to a legendary lost city of gold hidden on an island inspired by Jack and the Beanstalk.*
I've found the main character's defiant optimism in the face of overwhelming circumstances to be encouraging and relatable during bad times and that's why I've always loved and connected to it so much.
