plan9port is a project to port various userspace utilities from the original Plan 9 from Bell Labs project to various Unix-like OSes. Things like the acme editor and the rc shell and the `make` replacement `mk`

What makes Plan 9 so cool? The last I've heard of it was from that site called cat-v.org, which I've only recently found out was supposed to be some shitty parody site, or something.

It featured a few really radical design decisions, mostly. The wikipedia article on Plan 9 has a decent synopsis:
