it feels like the project is still finding a purpose. I think once we have a consumer VPN setup, so that tilde members can dial and be part of that tildenet, it makes more sense i think. then we can direct-connect to each other as tildeverse memebers

I have to agree (certain degree). Sometimes I'm shoved for using write(1) or talk(1) because I could have pinged on IRC. There are some services better run locally, game server for instance. At this point most of the services listed on tildeverse are free to public which *may change in future till then I cannot find a solid reason.
In the end, it's fun making tilde bubble :)
