hey ~teammates,
there has been a bit of discussion on irc about this, but the main
limiting factor that we've been running into here on ~team is the disk
space.
this machine has two 250gb ssd disks that were autoconfigured into raid
1 by the default installer image. i originally missed this step during
setup (the option to reconfigure disks with the hetzner-specific
settings).
since all user data is already backed up hourly, i'm fairly comfortable
switching off the redundancy of raid 1. this would involve copying / to
a temporary machine that i plan on renting short-term as a staging
ground, reinstalling with the hetzner installer, then copying / back
onto the same machine, but with the disks reconfigured as raid 0 - up to
500 gb!
since this will inevitably incur some downtime, i wanted to reach out
and make sure that this is something that we want to see happen and also
check if there are any times that this should *not* be performed.
holler here on the list or on irc if you have any thoughts, concerns, or
other time constraints that i should be aware of.

hey ~teammates,
sparked by a conversation on mastodon and solderpunk's phlog[0] today,
i've replaced fingerd with efingerd, a more flexible alternative that
gives you as the user full control over your finger output.
for more info on the finger setup, see man 8 efingerd and the wiki
page[1] that ~ahriman put together. for an example ~/.efingerd script,
see [2].
the other part of the equation is talk and talkd.
this is still partially ongoing, but local talk works (even with
multiuser!). up next is federated talk, which should be coming soon once
tomasino and i get it all sorted. the test connections are between
cosmic.voyage and here. some of our initial findings are posted on
tomasino's phlog[3].

I've added a dcss script to /usr/local/bin to download the game key
and ssh to the crawl server provided by ahriman.
Feel free to inspect the source if you're curious, but it just downloads
the key for you and uses it to connect.

Pretty self-explanatory. What is everyone working on right now?
Currently, I'm working on sharpening my scripting and development
skills with respect to system administration. As in, I'm not
trying to become some rockstar software engineer, but I want to be
fluent enough to where it significantly aids in maintaining a
system. Right now I'm working with python, but I've ordered
The Rust Programming Language. I'm interested in using rust and
python both for system administration.
Oh, I also just got ssh working with my PGP key. w00t. This makes
life a lot easier. No more backing up ssh keys, just back up my
PGP key. And one single key to use everywhere. Now I just need
to set it up on my personal VPS since I use that as a jump
station to everywhere else.
But yeah, let's hear it! Tell us what you're working on!

Hi fellow tilders !
I'm 'erxeto' at IRC, this is the email account I use the most, so I
changed my subscription.
So, I wanted to talk a little bit about netiquette and basic mailing
list behaviour.
I don't know many of you and I have no clue of your background, so if
you find this too basic or that "insults your intelligence" please
forgive me, I don't mean to be disrespectful in any way.
Mailing lists are old. Some of us have been subscribed to mailing lists
for many years. What this means is that mailing lists have a basic set
of rules that has been developed over the years. It works, and it makes
all the "experience" more smooth.

If you don't want to follow links, basically:
* post in plain text. Never, ever send html to the list. Some of us use
MUAs that don't play well with html. Besides, the html engine of the
mail readers is really broken. (And there's other issues, this topic
is huge).
* don't do top posting. Please, is really annoying and disrupts the
flow of the conversation.
* related to the previous one, reply inline AND remove the parts of
the email you're replying to that are not relevant. In other words,
keep just the context that makes sense and remove the rest. That
makes cleaner emails and is easier to read.
* wrap lines. The link I sent says 72 columns. If you're curious,
that's because a 'regular' terminal has 80 columns, and 8 chars less
gives you some room for the '> ' response prefix, making the threads
with nested replies more readable.
* the link talks about gpg inline, I think that's less of a concern
given the amount of people that actually uses gpg. I personally don't
sign any email going to a mailing list, but that's personal
preference.
* I may add, don't send attachments to the list (or if you do, they
have to be really small). Think about the people with bad internet
connections or limited resources. It's better to send a link to a
download site. If you do this, remember to say what it is and it's
size. Something like https://foo.com/mylink (pdf, 3.5MB)
I think that's it, IMHO those are really basic things to do, and make
all the difference. You may encounter some mailing lists that are
really strict with this. I think that just "doing your best" is enough.
No need to ban anybody ;-)

regarding the wishlist:
I've seen at the website that there is a BSD server (bsd.tilde.team) but I cannot login with my credentials into that server.
Giving 'ping' command let me assume that this server is down at the moment.
Are there any plans to re-enable it to tilde.team users?
