hey ~teammates!
i'm planning on moving tilde.team to its new home next weekend (tentatively planned for saturday night).
i've ordered a new server from ovh (in their canada datacenter). i got it 25% off and it has roughly similar specs to the machine we've been running on for a while now. the main bonus i get on this new machine is the 16 IPs that are included for no additional cost.
~team will live in a VM with 32gb ram, 6 vCPUs, and 1tb disk.
the migration itself isn't a huge deal, but the dns changes required will be the hard part here. i'll be working this week to come up with a neat solution to be able to throw the switch all at once.
feel free to holler here if you have any concerns or suggestions.
if you want to see how the ping will change, you can check against 51.79.32.48 (the new ip).
thanks, ~ben

good luck with the migration and thanks for all the work you put in this!
About the DNS, which provider are you using ? Most of them have APIs nowadays, so you could have a json file prepared and just fire some queries ... I could give a hand with that if you need it.

from 49ms to 125ms :-( The price of being on the other side of the pond I guess.
Cheers,

i'm using cloudflare for dns. they've got a solid API but i ended up exporting the domains as zonefiles, sed'ing out the old addresses, and will re-import the zonefiles as soon as everything is migrated.

i can't recommend mosh enough :)

That's what I call a beefy machine with lots of storage and RAM :3

Have fun with comming up with a creative solution for that problem :3

Cheers,
PS: I'll write a something to the list about setting up a Matrix instance for ~team ^^

mosh helps loads with this! i get 135ms to the current box and it's totally usable when using mosh.

sounds good! not sure if i want to run a homeserver, but i'd be cool with the appservice bridge living on ~team.
if it doesn't need a port over 1024, then you'd be welcome to run it as a user unit!

So, it is safe to assume that tildegit's IP is moving as well?

yup, it will be changing to 51.79.32.48 as well. be on the lookout for the ssh host key warning!

Coolio, will be home... BTW will it be rsync'd like last time you had to reconfigurate things? (Purposeful misspelling cause I can hehe)

CANADA??!! oml I'm gonna have to check the ping... will you be shutting down the old box all together, so I can set up a hop thing, or...

Dats a lot of IPs holy crap, also what a bargain I think I'll have to check in the morning my time

No RAID to save the day if needed? Oof... I mean, VM = we're all good so long its backed up often, but still.

Lot of propagation tho?

woah, you are spamming the list. Are you trying to reply to `migration round 3 (or is this 4 now?)` ?
Yeah...
If yes then first turn on thread display in your client and look for first email from ben@tilde.team, just click on reply and send your message.
I was trying to forward my reply to angel's reply but it didn't work as you can see... sorry about that!

hey ~teammates,
we're on the new box now!
I had some time available tonight and wanted to get this over with.
Everything is where you left it but you will most likely see a warning from ssh the next time you try to connect. Remove the old key-ip pair from ~/.ssh/known_hosts and continue.
Thanks, ~ben
hey ~teammates,
Ben! What's up buddy?
