In Ecuador, there is a large monument called "Mitad del Mundo" or "Middle of the World." There is a large compass rose surrounding it with the cardinal directions marked and signs posted indicating that the east-west line sits at 0° latitude. It does not. It is 240 meters south of the true equator.
